More Than A Fast Food Franchise, This New Seafood Spot in Long Beach is a Family

The last time I had fried fish in Los Angeles, I took two bites and had to throw the rest away after choking on tiny bones. I was nearly scarred for life, thinking I may never trust fish out here in California again. When I was invited to the grand opening of Fishbone Seafood’s newest location and the owner of this franchise said the “orange roughy” is his favorite item on the menu, I decided I’d take the chance. And, baby, let me tell you… It was worth it!

Contrary to the name, there wasn’t a fishbone in sight. Thank God! In addition to not putting me on the verge of asphyxiation, the fish was flavorful and tasted fresh. The shrimp were big and juicy (yes, I made it a combo; what’s a cheat day if you don’t go all the way?). I hopped over the specialty punch everyone was raving about, and saved my sweet tooth for desert. And, oh my heavens, I’m glad I did! The red velvet cake they had available by Southern Sweetz was exactly what I needed to start my week off with a smile on my face.

Speaking of smiles… Even more impressive than the food, was the mood — the look of admiration on the wife’s face as she gazed at her husband, while he said a few words prior to cutting the red ribbon with giant scissors; the sincerity in his voice, as he expressed gratitude for everyone that helped make this happen, and asked for continued to support to keep making it happen. Food was there, but love made the day.

A day that was specifically chosen

Joe Luckett, the franchisee, chose the date because it’s his mother’s birthday. “I have two grandmothers. One isn’t here, but we’re celebrating her,” an adorable 7-year-old girl shared, after starting a conversation with me, as we hid from the sun together. Joe’s mother passed away two years ago, but her spirit was present as he honored her with this day.

The birthday cake for the owner’s late mother, the pretty face taking orders at the register, the slim fine thang rolling out into the parking lot on skates with the orders, the friendly little 7-year-old… and yeah, the food — all of these elements came together to form a great grand opening.

From what I observed, the foundation of this franchise is family. Stop in to be warmly welcomed and get your belly filled.

Fishbone Seafood Long Beach also offers catering, in addition to call-ins, walk-ins, and online order pick-up.
