Visit A Street Art Memorial Mural While You're Visiting LA
Where I’m from, the New Orleans side of Louisiana, we honor our dead by throwing somewhat of a party in the street. Where I live now, Southern California, they take their celebrations for the dead to the streets in a different way.
Street Art in Los Angeles
In Los Angeles, the paint dries on a memorial mural before the deceased is even put into the ground.
Have I never seen street art in New Orleans? Well of course I have seen street art in New Orleans, but there’s not nearly as much street art as there is street art in Los Angeles.
Street art is a part of Los Angeles culture.
The New York Times summarized it well, in LA, “residents speak of their loss through art and graffiti in public places.”
Though I’m not a Kobe Bryant fan, there’s no denying that in L.A., Kobe dominates the paint. I don’t think officials had even properly announced his passing and street art paintings of the legendary Lakers’ player started popping up with wings coming out of his back.
What makes visiting a street art memorial mural a cool thing to do while you’re visiting Los Angeles?
It’s a way to pay homage to one of your favorite Los Angeles sports team athletes, West Coast rappers, or national public figures that called LA home. It’s also a great girls day out or date idea with someone who shares interest in the same celebrity (or simply art itself).
From a less sentimental aspect, it’s a way to make your Instagram pop while in Los Angeles.
Though Los Angeles isn’t the only city that has street art painted on the sides of its buildings, LA has distinct street art. When you take a picture in front of one of these street art murals in Los Angeles, the picture will tell everyone that you’re in Los Angeles. These great photo spots in LA will have people scrolling thru their Instagram feeds, stopping on your photo, saying, “ou, where is she?!”, unlike a geotag that is easily overlooked.
