Why Corporate Offices Should Offer Safe, Convenient Bicycle Parking

Why Corporate Offices Should Offer Safe, Convenient Bicycle Parking

When I visited the Netflix Headquarters in Hollywood, one feature stood out immediately: the impressive bicycle parking section. Unlike the average office bike rack tucked away in some corner, Netflix offers a fully enclosed, secure space for bicycles, complete with lockers for storing helmets and other gear. Even better, it’s completely free for employees, unlike the paid parking for cars. This simple yet effective measure shows that Netflix is ahead of the curve in encouraging sustainable commuting options. So why aren’t more companies doing this? In this post, we’ll dive into why corporate offices should follow Netflix’s lead and make bicycle parking a priority.

Similar to the vast majority of America, Los Angeles has a car-centric culture when it comes to transportation. Fortunately, there’s opportunity for great growth in this forward-moving, creativity-filled metropolis that we call the City of Angels.

Where are majority of people going in a big city on any given day, if you had to say? Work! People with jobs, jobs that aren’t remote, have a physical location to which he or she must report on a regular basis. (School is the other big category of people with an ongoing place to go and I’m glad to see sustainable transportation initiatives being led by UCLA and others). School and work are where most people are going on a regular basis, making those areas able to cause waves of change. Inspired by my visit to the Netflix headquarters in Los Angeles, places of employment are on my mind in the moment..

Let's take a little look at driving to work

While driving to work can be convenient for longer distances, it comes with its own set of downsides.

  • Fuel costs, parking fees, and traffic stress can add up, making it less appealing.

  • On top of that, the environmental impact of driving every day is significant.

What are the pros and cons of commuting to work by car?

Driving to work is often viewed as the most convenient option, especially for those with longer commutes or unpredictable schedules. The comfort of climate control, the privacy of your own space, and the flexibility to run errands on the way are definite perks. However, these benefits come at a price. High fuel costs, rising parking fees, and the unpredictability of traffic congestion can turn what seems like a smooth commute into a stressful daily grind. Additionally, the environmental impact of driving, with emissions contributing to pollution, is a growing concern in cities like Los Angeles. While driving offers convenience, it’s important to weigh those advantages against the ongoing financial and environmental costs.

Pros & Cons of Driving to Work

Pros Cons
Convenient for longer distances High fuel costs, especially in L.A.
Flexibility with timing Parking fees and stress
Comfortable in harsh weather Traffic congestion and delays
Privacy and personal space Environmental impact

Why Employers Should Provide Bicycle Parking

Providing bicycle parking isn’t just about accommodating a few bike enthusiasts; it’s about creating an environment that promotes healthier lifestyles and reduces the environmental impact of daily commutes. Companies that invest in secure, convenient bike parking can expect:

  • Healthier Employees: Regular bike commuters tend to be healthier, leading to lower healthcare costs and reduced absenteeism.

  • Cost Savings: Parking infrastructure for bicycles is significantly cheaper than that for motor vehicles. Additionally, promoting cycling can reduce the demand for expensive car parking spots.

  • Improved Employee Satisfaction: Offering amenities like bike parking can enhance job satisfaction and attract talent interested in sustainable commuting options.

Why Employees Should Utilize Bicycle Parking Provided by Employers

If you’re lucky enough to work at a company that offers secure bicycle parking, you’re sitting on a great opportunity. Here’s why more employees should take advantage:

  • Cost Efficiency: In a city like L.A., where gas prices and parking fees are sky-high, commuting by bike can save you a significant amount of money over time.

  • Time Savings: With growing traffic congestion in L.A., biking can often be quicker than driving, especially for short commutes.

  • Personal Health Benefits: Cycling to work offers a built-in workout, keeping you active without the need for a separate gym session.

What are the pros and cons of commuting to work by bike?

Biking to work is an eco-friendly, cost-effective alternative that’s growing in popularity, especially in urban areas like L.A. Commuting by bike saves money on gas, parking, and maintenance while offering the added benefit of daily exercise. Many find that biking improves both mental and physical health, reducing stress and keeping them active. However, cycling comes with its own challenges, such as dealing with unpredictable weather, navigating busy roads, and managing the impact on your hair and wardrobe. Still, with growing support for biking infrastructure and the potential for employers to offer secure parking, the benefits of cycling to work often outweigh the drawbacks for those committed to a greener and healthier commute.

Pros of Biking to Work Cons of Biking to Work
Healthier lifestyle and increased fitness Weather challenges like rain or excessive heat

Why It’s Better to Bike to Work in L.A.

In Los Angeles, where car culture reigns supreme, biking to work offers surprising advantages:

  • Environmental Impact: Biking significantly reduces your carbon footprint.

  • Avoiding Traffic: Biking helps you skip the endless gridlock L.A. is infamous for.

  • Mental Wellness: The fresh air, endorphin boost, and reduction in daily stress can have long-term benefits for your mental health.

The Netflix Example: How Complimentary Bike Parking Incentivizes Healthier Commutes

Netflix’s free and secure bike parking is a fantastic example of how corporate offices can incentivize biking. By making it more convenient to bike than to drive, companies can influence employees’ commuting choices. It’s logical—bike parking is cheaper, healthier employees save the company money, and it aligns with sustainability goals. Plus, happier employees often mean better performance and higher retention rates.

The Ripple Effect of More Bike Commuters

The benefits extend beyond just the company. More bike commuters mean less traffic, reduced pollution, and healthier communities. Neighborhoods become more bike-friendly, and local businesses may see increased patronage from those who cycle by.
